The Semantics of Prop 8 (CA)
Prop 8 from Wikipedia…
“Proposition 8 (or the California Marriage Protection Act) was a ballot proposition and constitutional amendment passed in the November 2008, state elections. The measure added a new provision, Section 7.5 of the Declaration of Rights, to the California Constitution, which provides that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
It was turned over by U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker yesterday.
..but it’s really about semantics
We have two forms of marriage in our society. the sacramental (religious) and the legal (state). The only similarity they have is that they connect two people together. One legally, one sacramentally. Prop 8 proponents are fighting for one and the opponents are fighting for the another. Let’s stop arguing about semantics. The state cannot define what a religious marriage is to be and the religious cannot define what equal protection should be granted under the state. Each side of Prop 8 want their side to go outside of the bounds of authority.
Whatever happened to the separation of church and state!
